There are several types of cardboard used in packaging, each with its own specific characteristics and applications. The main types of cardboard are:

  • Corrugated cardboard: This is the most common type used in packaging and consists of three layers: a flat outer layer, a corrugated inner layer and another flat outer layer. The corrugated structure provides strength and impact protection.
  • Compact cardboard: Also known as solid cardboard, this is a simple, rigid cardboard, consisting of a single layer. It is used in smaller, lower-strength cardboard packaging.
  • Foldable cardboard: This type of cardboard is light and flexible and is mainly used for foldable packaging, such as cardboard boxes for food, pharmaceuticals or small electronic devices.
  • Microcorrugated cardboard: This is a variant of corrugated cardboard, but with much smaller corrugations. It is used for packaging that requires a high level of detail and finish, such as packaging for high-end products or quality printing.

What is the typical load capacity of the cardboard and how is it determined?

In order to determine the load capacity of a specific cardboard packaging, strength tests are carried out. One of the most common is the compression test. In this test, pressure is gradually applied to the top of the packaging until a point is reached where the packaging deforms or collapses. Strength is measured in kilograms per square metre (kg/m²).
